As summer winds down and fall begins, now is the time to make sure your children as well as yourself have everything you need to keep your smiles healthy. The following guidelines will enable you to do just that.
1.) Have the Correct Supplies Handy
Every household has toothpaste and toothbrushes available, but this is the time of year to ensure your supplies are in good condition. Get an ADA-approved toothpaste that your kids will actually enjoy using. Take a look at your toothbrushes and evaluate their condition. Worn toothbrushes are not as effective at cleaning the teeth. Floss is a must to have in the house at all times also. This is a good first step to practicing good oral hygiene.
2.) Get on Schedule
During the summer, schedules aren't always followed exactly. You may not have been watching your children's brushing and flossing habits as closely. Now that they are headed back to school and getting back on schedule, their hygiene habits should as well. Designate certain time for brushing and flossing teeth. A good way to do this is as a whole family twice a day, say after breakfast and just before bed every day and night.
3.) Pack Healthy Snacks and Drinks
Children will opt for healthy snacks instead of junk food when it is readily available. Pack healthy snacks that are good for both your child and their teeth. Have healthy choices available for snacking while at home also. Good choices are hard cheeses, crunchy fruits and veggies, and water instead of sports and energy drinks. Avoid candy and other high-sugar foods and drinks. Sports and energy drinks are a bad choice because they are highly acidic which wears down tooth enamel. Encourage your children to bring water to school and sports events. A good way to encourage water drinking is to bring your child to the store and allow them to pick out their own bottle that is refillable. It will be more likely for your child to drink from their water bottle when they got a chance to help pick it out.
4.) Encourage your Child To Rinse
While your children are at school, its not always an option for them to brush after every meal. A great way to keep teeth healthy is to rinse after every meal. Encourage your children to take a trip to the water fountain or bathroom after lunch and give a good rinse of their mouth with water.
5.) Schedule a Back To School CheckupThis is the perfect time to schedule checkups for your children and yourself. If its been 6 months since your family's last dental visit, its time to get an appointment on the calendar. General checkups also allow our doctor to check for any signs of alignment problems or other areas of concern.
